The Vancouver City Central Transmission Project at David Lam Park
Vancouver Ready Mix was the concrete grout supplier to Michels Canada for the Vancouver City Central Transmission Project. A complicated job that started at David Lam Park in downtown Vancouver and terminated at Laurel Street in South Vancouver required the use of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) to install a power cable duct bank under False Creek. The project for BC Hydro consisted of nearly five miles of 230 kV underground transmission circuits, including the 2,789-foot HDD crossing. This trenchless technology minimizes the environmental impact.
A technique called Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) was used to connect the north and south sides of the underground transmission line beneath the bed of False Creek. This is a trenchless technology used to install underground infrastructure such as pipes and cables and minimizes environmental impacts.
“Vancouver Ready Mix’s ability to solve complicated supply and batching issues and their out-of-the-box thinking that took place on our project proved to be crucial in our ability to provide our client with the level of service and a product that met the contract specifications”, said Craig Vandaelle, project manager at Michels Canada. “The approach that Dennis Baker took to meeting our needs and assisting us with the planning and implementation of our grouting plan was greatly appreciated by the entire project team.”
The high-voltage installation was the most significant power project to be built in Vancouver in the last 30 years. It was one of the most challenging pipe pulls achieved by Michels and the biggest duct bundle-grouting job ever undertaken.
